TOKYO (TR) – Tokyo Metropolitan Police have launched an investigation following the discovery of a corpse inside an apartment in Setagaya Ward that was under demolition, reports TBS News (Nov. 14).

At approximately 10:00 a.m. on Friday, a construction crew found skeletal remains on the second floor of the apartment, which is located in the Taishido area. Its gender and approximate age were not known.

The body was attired in jacket and pants. An electrical cord was wrapped in its hair.

A health insurance card and cigarette lighter were also found at the scene.

Police, who are treating the case as either a suicide or the result of foul play, will use a DNA analysis in an attempt to identify the body.

The whereabouts of the resident of the apartment have been unknown for about 15 years.

According to NHK (NHK), demolition work at the residence began three years ago and was suspended. It resumed on Friday. Police believe it is possible that a person entered the residence during the suspended period.
