TOKYO (TR) – Tokyo Metropolitan Police have released fashion model Jessica Michibata following her arrest on suspicion of possessing a controlled substance last month.

However, Michibata’s American boyfriend, who was also arrested, faces an additional charge of smuggling, reports TV Asahi (April 5).

On Wednesday, Michibata, 38, was released from the Harajuku Police Station. She had been in custody since police found 15 capsules of MDMA, or Ecstasy, inside a package in her hotel room in the Roppongi entertainment district of Minato Ward on March 19.

“I have no knowledge [of the matter],” Michibata was quoted by police in denying the allegations.

Police also arrested 46-year-old Kenneth Kao, a film producer, on suspicion of possessing MDMA. Kao has also admitted to allegations of smuggling, police said.

The contraband was discovered inside the package by Japan Customs at Narita International Airport. After the package was forwarded onward to Kao at the hotel, officers entered the room and arrested the pair on the spot.

According to the web site for Michibata’s agency, she is based in the United States. She has appeared as a fashion model in advertisements for cosmetics and drinking water.
