AICHI (TR) – Visitors are traveling from afar to a department store in Nagoya for a chance to see a pair of premium persimmons being sold for an eye-watering price of 300,000 yen, Nippon News Network reported on Saturday (October 29).
The department store in Nakamura Ward is pricing the persimmons, sold under the label “Tenka Tomimai” and grown in Gifu Prefecture, at a rounded number of 300,000 yen after another pair was sold at an auction on Friday for a record price of 324,000 yen.
Compared to their typical counterparts with some 15 degrees of sweetness, the premium persimmons offer a sweetness of over 25 degrees.
The Tenka Tomimai name was inspired by the red seal of Oda Nobunaga, a powerful warlord who tried to unify Japan in the late 1500s, according to the Gifu prefectural government’s web site.
Tenka Tomimai also represents a wish that all who hold the persimmons in their hands would have wealth dance around them, the web site said.
