PHILIPPINES (TR) – Philippine immigration authorities have detained a 38-year-old Japanese fugitive who practically handed himself over by walking into an office in Manila to extend his visa, reports Fuji News Network (Aug. 5).
Haruki Koizumi was taken into custody in the Philippine capital on July 31, according to the Bureau of Immigration.
Koizumi was the subject of an active arrest warrant issued by a Japanese court on suspicion of violating the Act on Prevention of Transfer of Criminal Proceeds, a charge typically associated with money laundering and the facilitation of financial fraud.
The suspect’s time on the run came to an abrupt end when he visited the immigration bureau to process a routine visa extension. Officials ran his records, flagged him as an international fugitive wanted by Japanese authorities, and promptly placed him under arrest.
Koizumi is currently being held at a Philippine immigration detention facility and is expected to be deported back to Japan to face charges.
