HYOGO (TR) – Police in Akashi City have arrested a 51-year-old fisherman over a fatal bicycle hit-and-run that left an 83-year-old woman dead, local police announced, reports TV Asahi (Sep. 23).
At approximately 7:15 a.m. on September 20, the victim was crouching down in front of her home to pet a dog in a residential area near Akashi Port. A man riding a bicycle slammed into her and subsequently fled the scene without offering assistance.
A neighborhood acquaintance who witnessed the aftermath placed a frantic emergency call, reporting that the elderly woman had suffered a severe head injury, was convulsing, and was unconscious. The victim later died from her injuries.
The suspect’s apprehension came after his own father, a man in his 80s, watched a television news broadcast about the fatal incident. Noticing that his son was acting suspiciously, the father went to a nearby police box to report his concerns.
Following the tip, police requested Osamu Nakatani to voluntarily accompany them for questioning. He was subsequently arrested on suspicion of hit-and-run resulting in death.
During police interrogation, Nakatani admitted to the allegations and offered a bizarre justification for fleeing the scene.
“I was looking away and hit the old woman, causing her death,” Nakatani told investigators. “I ran because I didn’t want to get yelled at.”
