TOKYO (TR) – Four years ago, the government enactment of legislation to protect adult video (AV) actresses four years ago.
Actress Sora Amakawa entered the biz before the law came into effect. In speaking with Nikkan Spa! (May 21), the actress shines a light on the dark underbelly of the industry, revealing a harrowing past of psychological “brainwashing,” GPS tracking and massive unpaid wages at the hands of a manipulative acquaintance and a corrupt agency boss.
Debuting in 2019 to support her family financially, Amakawa was initially lured into a talent agency for AV actresses by a female “friend.” However, she soon discovered this friend was secretly profiting off a lucrative “scout-back” system — taking a continuous cut of Amakawa’s earnings just for introducing her to the agency.
The situation quickly spiraled into severe coercive control. Under the guise of “looking out for her,” the friend attached a GPS tracker to Amakawa, restricted her contact with outsiders, and dictated her sleep schedule and meals to strip her of her ability to think clearly.
“It was brainwashing,” Amakawa revealed in a recent interview. “She would play on my guilty conscience, starting off pretending to worry about me, but becoming increasingly dominant.”
The financial exploitation was just as severe. The friend convinced the agency president that Amakawa was “mentally unstable” and would squander her money, allowing the friend to intercept the actress’s paychecks.
Amakawa was left with a mere 25 percent of her total earnings and was bizarrely forced to pay the friend’s rent, meals and utility bills under the guise of “miscellaneous expenses.”

Agency’s president
This nightmare lasted for roughly a year before Amakawa managed to escape the psychological grip by deleting her social media accounts, ditching the GPS and cutting off all contact with her handler.
However, her ordeal was far from over. Once free of the friend, Amakawa found herself victimized by the agency’s president.
Despite production companies paying the agency for Amakawa’s video shoots, the money never reached her. The agency president was systematically embezzling company funds and the actresses’ wages to fuel a massive gambling addiction.
Amakawa survived by eating into her personal savings for a year, ultimately being defrauded out of several million yen. She noted that even top-tier actresses at the same agency were being stiffed.
When asked why she never pursued criminal or civil charges, Amakawa cited a toxic culture of intimidation and a complete lack of legal paperwork. Occurring before the implementation of the Adult Video Appearance Victim Prevention and Relief Act in 2022, the agency had deliberately avoided drafting formal contracts, despite her repeated requests.
Furthermore, Amakawa witnessed other actresses who attempted civil lawsuits face vicious retaliatory doxxing and online harassment by industry insiders.
Realizing the agency essentially held the “power of life and death” over her career, and fearing further retaliation, she ultimately chose to walk away from the millions she was owed.
“If you assert your rights too much, you’re viewed as difficult to handle,” Amakawa said, highlighting a systemic issue of exploitation where countless women were forced to simply cry themselves to sleep and move on.
