TOKYO (TR) – Last month, weekly magazines reported on 27-year-old actor Ryoki Miyama’s illicit hotel rendezvous with 33-year-old actress Maria Kano.
The case is part of a chilling new trend in Japan’s infidelity industry: mistresses hiring private detectives to target unsuspecting wives, reports Nikkan Gendai (Aug. 11).
The weekly magazine Shukan Bunshun blew the lid off the “inappropriate relationship” between Miyama and Kano. The magazine’s follow-up report featured highly detailed email exchanges between the pair, sparking intense speculation in the entertainment industry over the identity of the leaker.
Miyama’s wife, 35-year-old actress Shuri, was completely blindsided, telling the magazine, “I knew absolutely nothing.”
Aggressive tactics
While the source of the leak remains a mystery, the scandal has drawn attention to the increasingly aggressive tactics used by women engaged in affairs with married men.
A recent viral post on X by a private investigator detailed the chilling requests agencies routinely receive from single women sleeping with married men.
According to the post, mistresses frequently hire detectives to uncover what the wife looks like, where she works, and whether she is also committing adultery. More disturbingly, they request to know the specific kindergartens and schools attended by the man’s children.
Force a divorce
The most audacious request? “I want you to capture the exact moment the husband and I walk into a love hotel together,” effectively paying a detective to manufacture undeniable evidence of their own affair to force a divorce.
Haruame Hibi, a writer specializing in relationship issues, notes that this aggressive tactic is driven by a shift in women’s financial independence.
“In the old days of the classic boss-and-subordinate affair, the woman might wait around hoping he’d leave his wife. But she would eventually pump the brakes, realizing that if he actually got divorced, the alimony and child support would leave him penniless, and she couldn’t support them both,” Hibi explains.
“Playing with fire”
Today, however, the dynamic has shifted.
“If a woman can afford to hire a private investigator in the first place, she has money. Even if the man is kicked out of his home and hit with a massive settlement, these women push the pedal to the metal to force a divorce, knowing they can financially support him,” Hibi adds. “They view it as playing with fire, but they are determined to make the man theirs at any cost.”
The barrier to illicit romance is lower than ever. A recent survey by the MR Detective Agency revealed that approximately one in three married individuals admits to secretly messaging someone of the opposite sex via social media or apps.
However, as the Miyama scandal proves, the social sanctions for infidelity are only growing harsher. Married men playing with fire might soon find that the person pouring gasoline on their marriage is the very woman they are sneaking into a love hotel with.
