TOKYO (TR) – Adult video (AV) actress Yua Mikami appeared in exactly one film in 2015 — but, wow, what a film it was. “Princess Peach,” her debut, ranked second on year-end sales and rental charts for distributor DMM.

It now appears the accolades are starting to roll in.

At last week’s DMM Adult Awards 2016, a marquee event to honor the top female talent in the industry, the 22-year-old starlet topped a field of 10 contestants in receiving the Best New Actress prize.

“I’m so glad to receive such a nice prize in front of so many people today,” said Mikami, attired in a fluffy white dress and lei adorned in flowers, during the proceedings, held on May 4 in front of hundreds of fans at the Toyosu Pit hall in Tokyo’s Koto Ward. One of those persons was Moe Amatsuka, who won the award last year.

The winners of the event were determined by a combination of Internet fan voting and sales data for titles distributed by DMM in 2015. A total of 19 actresses strode through the hall via a red carpet in hopes of garnering accolades for their performances.

For Hibiki Otsuki, an eight-year industry veteran, a lot of hard work finally paid off: She took the Best Actress prize. “Since my debut in 2008, I hadn’t won a top award at a commendation ceremony,” said the actress. “Many times I was frustrated, and I honestly thought that I would quit. But through the help of my fans I never did.”

By the end of the night, some familiar faces walked away with other top prizes. Aika was presented the Excellent Actress award by last year’s winner, Marina Shiraishi. Also picking up accolades were starlets Mana Sakura (Media Award) and Julia (Special Prize).

But the night belonged to Mikami. The actress, who has appeared in a number of films this year, including “Pleasant Feeling,” also collected three distribution- or production-related awards for “Princess Peach.”

“Last year, I began down a new road by entering this industry,” said the actress, a former member of all-girl pop group SKE48. “At first I did not know anything, but little by little, and through the help of a lot of people, I was able to develop as a person.”
