Osaka Prefectural Police arrested the 21-year-old male South Korean male suspect in Tajima Park, Osaka, on suspicion of violating the Swords and Firearms Control Law after he complied with demands to drop the weapon on the ground, the Sankei Shimbun reports (June 4).
“I was extremely frustrated because I had an argument with my family,” the suspect told police.
Authorities said the park was empty at the time of the incident. There were no reported injuries.
Police responded to an emergency call from a witness claiming a man was “going on a knife-swinging rampage” at Tajima Park at around 9:45 a.m.
Officers, including a police sergeant, arrived at the scene to find the suspect wildly swinging a knife around.
The suspect started to approach the officers, prompting the sergeant to point his gun at the man as he warned him to “put down the knife.” The suspect complied and was arrested on the spot.
