TOKYO (TR) – A taxi hit an elderly woman who was crossing the street at an intersection in Shibuya Ward on Thursday. The woman later died at a hospital, police said.
At a little after 6:00 p.m., a taxi passenger called police near Miyamasuzakashita intersection near JR Shibuya Station, reports TV Asahi (Dec. 27).
According to police, the taxi was attempting to turn left when it hit Sachiko Nakamura, 76, as she was crossing the street from the direction of JR Shibuya Station.
Nakamura was taken to hospital in a state of cardiac arrest. However, she was later confirmed dead.
Police arrested the taxi driver, Yoshikazu Ui, 73, on suspicion of negligent driving resulting in injury.
Police are currently investigating the cause of the accident, including whether the traffic lights were functioning properly at the time.
