TOKYO (TR) – Guinness World Records on Thursday recognized the 634-meter Tokyo Sky Tree as the world’s tallest tower, according to Kyodo.
At a ceremony, the managing director of Guinness World Records, Alistair Richards, presented a certificate to Michiaki Suzuki, the owner and president of Tobu Tower Sky Tree Co., the news service reported.
The Tokyo Sky Tree, located in the eastern part of the capital in Sumida Ward, surpassed the 600-meter-high Canton Tower in Guangzhou, China.
“One of the purposes of the tower construction is to let the world learn about Japanese culture and technology, and the allure of a downtown area of Tokyo,” Suzuki is quoted by Kyodo as saying. “The recognition [by Guinness World Records] gives us great strength as we strive to meet that goal.”
The television transmission tower will open to the public in May of next year, the news service said. The world’s tallest structure, as recognized by Guinness, is the 828-meter Burj Khalifa skyscraper in Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates.
