MIYAGI (TR) – Miyagi Prefectural Police have arrested a 42-year-old man for stealing a bag containing a staggering 22 million yen after security workers accidentally dropped it on a street in Sendai City, reports the Sankei Shimbun (July 25).
Takuya Suenaga, a part-time worker residing in Higashimatsushima City, was taken into custody by the Sendai-Chuo Police Station on July 25 on suspicion of theft. Upon his arrest, Suenaga admitted to the allegations.
The brazen theft took place at approximately noon on March 5 in the city’s Aoba Ward. According to police, two security company employees were using a handcart to transport bags of cash from a local store to a waiting armored vehicle.
During the transfer, one of the specialized bags slipped off the cart. Suenaga, who happened to witness the mishap, allegedly swooped in, picked up the bag containing 22 million yen in cash, and walked off with it.
After the security company realized the massive loss and filed a police report, investigators analyzed security camera footage from the surrounding area and successfully tracked down Suenaga.
Authorities have already confiscated a portion of the stolen cash and are continuing to investigate the detailed circumstances surrounding the incident.
