Man accused of stealing bag from distracted Sumida fireworks spectator

TOKYO (TR) – Police in Taito Ward have arrested a 24-year-old man on suspicion of stealing a backpack from a woman who was distracted while taking photos during the Sumida River Fireworks Festival, reports Fuji News Network (July 27).

Noriyuki Kagoshima, a resident of Iwata City, Shizuoka Prefecture, whose occupation is unknown, was caught red-handed on July 25 on the grounds of Senso-ji Temple.

According to police, the incident occurred at the height of the fireworks festival. Kagoshima allegedly sneaked up behind the victim while she was focused on recording the fireworks display on her smartphone and snatched a backpack she had placed at her feet.

The bag contained approximately 6,000 yen in cash alongside other items.

Upon his arrest, Kagoshima admitted to the allegations, citing financial troubles for his actions. “I came to Tokyo to have fun, but I ran out of money, so I stole the bag,” the suspect was quoted as telling investigators.
