TOKYO (TR) — Tokyo Metropolitan Police are searching for multiple suspects after at least 400 million yen in cash was stolen from a members-only safe deposit facility in Hachioji City on Tuesday, reports NHK (Apr. 28).
At shortly before 9:00 a.m., an employee at the facility located in Asahicho placed an emergency call to police, reporting that rented safe deposit boxes had been forcibly pried open.
According to investigators, out of the 900 safe deposit boxes housed within the facility, two were found to have been targeted. The boxes were secured with a rigorous double-lock system consisting of a dial lock and a keyhole, but the perpetrators managed to break through both to access the contents.
The male victim holding the contract for the compromised boxes told police that between 400 million and 500 million yen in cash was stored inside at the time of the heist.
He told NHK that he had been using the safe deposit box for about two years. “The stolen money was earned from rental income from restaurants and real estate businesses I used to run,” he said. “I’m so frustrated, and I hate the culprit. I can’t find the words.”
Security camera footage from the premises captured multiple individuals at the scene. Police treating the incident as a major theft and is currently tracking the whereabouts of the suspects on the run.
