Chiba woman, 25, confesses to leaving corpse of newborn in closet

CHIBA (TR) – Chiba Prefectural Police on Tuesday announced the discovery of the body of an infant in a closet at an apartment in Chiba City following a confession from a hospitalized woman, reports the Sankei Shimbun (Apr. 29).

On Monday, a 25-year-old woman was rushed to the hospital after suffering from a fever. During an examination by a doctor, it was determined that she had recently given birth.

At around 2:35 a.m. on Tuesday, a representative from the hospital alerted police. “I hid the baby in a closet in my apartment,” she told police arriving at the hospital.

Officers working off that tip found the body of the newborn boy in the closet later on Tuesday morning, according to the Chiba-Higashi Police Station.

The infant had been dead for several days. There were no visible external injuries on the body.

Police are questioning the woman, a part-time worker, to learn the circumstances that led to the death of the newborn. They are also questioning a man who also lives in the residence.
