TOKYO (TR) – Tokyo Metropolitan Police on Saturday arrested a 62-year-old man for the murder of his roommate, reports NHK (Dec. 19).

On Friday evening, Yoshio Onda inflicted massive injuries to his male roommate, aged in his 50s, after repeatedly beating him with a cane and his hands inside a room of the apartment they share in Adachi Ward. After being transported to a hospital, he was confirmed dead on Saturday morning.

The suspect and the victim began living together about five years ago. The suspect told police that he had been assisting the victim.

“But, with him pestering me for money and continually drinking, my patience ended and I beat him,” the suspect was quoted by police.

After the assault, the victim was found seated on a street by a male passerby.

Onda was initially charged with manslaughter but that was later changed to murder.

Police are now attempting to confirm the identity of the victim.
