TOKYO (TR) – Aflac Life Insurance has revealed that a massive cyberattack on its systems has compromised the personal data of roughly 4.38 million current and former policyholders, the company said on Tuesday.
According to the cancer insurance giant, hackers repeatedly targeted the system hosting its exclusive policyholder portal site starting from June 15.
The sweeping data leak includes names, addresses, telephone numbers, and insurance coverage details of both current and past clients. In an alarming development for some customers, the company admitted that the breach also exposed bank account information used for the direct withdrawal of insurance premiums.
However, Aflac stressed that highly sensitive My Number profiles and credit card details were not compromised in the attack. As of now, police and the company have yet to confirm any instances of the stolen information being misused.
In a scramble to contain the fallout and prevent further unauthorized access, Aflac has taken the affected systems offline. There is currently no timeline for when the portal will be restored.
“We deeply apologize for causing inconvenience and concern to our affected customers,” Aflac said in a statement following the breach. The company vowed to aggressively bolster its cybersecurity defenses against future intrusions.
