Ex-Yokozuna Terunofuji demoted over violence against disciple who groped woman

TOKYO (TR) — The Japan Sumo Association (JSA) last week handed down disciplinary measures against stablemaster Isegahama, the former Yokozuna Terunofuji, after he struck a disciple who drunkenly groped a female acquaintance of a stable supporter, reports Nikkan Sports (Apr. 9).

Following an extraordinary board meeting on April 9, the JSA announced that the 34-year-old stablemaster has been demoted two ranks from committee member status to a regular elder (toshiyori) and slapped with a 10 percent salary reduction for three months.

The scandal erupted in the early hours of February 21 during a drinking session in the capital. According to the JSA Compliance Committee, 22-year-old Makuuchi-division wrestler Hakunofuji became heavily intoxicated and inappropriately touched the thigh of a woman who was accompanying a stable supporter (tanimachi).

Enraged by the disciple’s lewd conduct, Isegahama reprimanded Hakunofuji, yelling, “You can’t just get away with saying you drank too much and don’t remember!” before striking the young wrestler twice in the face.

“Regain trust”

While the JSA strictly prohibits violence, the Compliance Committee noted that Isegahama voluntarily reported the incident the following day and was acting out of a desire to correct his disciple’s behavior. As a result, the stablemaster avoided the harsher penalty of a stable closure. However, he will be placed under the strict supervision of the JSA and the Isegahama clan for the time being.

“I take this punishment sincerely and will work my hardest to regain everyone’s trust,” a bowing Isegahama told the press after the ruling.

Meanwhile, Hakunofuji escaped formal disciplinary action and was let off with a severe reprimand from JSA Chairman Hakkaku. The association condemned the young wrestler’s actions as “an act that disrespects the dignity of women,” but noted that the female victim had not filed a formal complaint.

Hakunofuji, who has reportedly faced past restrictions for similar alcohol-fueled incidents, apologized for his “careless actions” that brought trouble upon the association.
