TOKYO (TR) – Popular adult video (AV) actress Mika Azuma has revealed the harrowing ordeal that led her to the adult entertainment industry: a brutal betrayal by her former fiancé, a medical doctor who forbade her from seeking mental health care before abandoning her in a psychiatric ward, reports Spa! (July 13).
According to a recent interview detailing her past, Azuma met the internal medicine specialist through a matchmaking agency just before the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite planning to marry, the couple faced severe intimacy issues. The doctor claimed to suffer from ejaculation disorders but refused to seek medical help for the condition, leaving Azuma feeling inadequate and severely depressed.
As Azuma’s mental and physical health deteriorated, her fiancé leveraged his medical background to forbid her from visiting a psychiatrist for six months. Citing his own prejudices against psychiatric medicine, he restricted her to only receiving gynecological hormone treatments, which proved ineffective.
Hospitalized
Left without proper psychological care, Azuma became virtually bedridden, suffering from extreme weight loss and cognitive decline. It was only after her desperate parents intervened that the doctor finally allowed her to see a mental health professional, who immediately recognized her severe condition.
Azuma was subsequently hospitalized in a psychiatric ward at her fiancé’s insistence. However, the hospitalization ultimately served as an opportunity to discard her.
About a month into her stay, the doctor abruptly dumped her over the phone. While Azuma was confined to the hospital, he unilaterally canceled their shared apartment, transferred her residency registration (juminhyo) back to her parents’ home without her consent, and coldly ordered her family to collect her belongings. Azuma speculates the sudden abandonment was triggered by his wounded pride after she tearfully confided in his parents and her doctor about their sexless relationship.
Social rehabilitation
Stripped of her home, her job — which she had quit at his request to become a housewife — and her dignity, Azuma found an unexpected lifeline on the internet.
Following her discharge, she rented a dilapidated, cheap apartment and began broadcasting as a “sexy VTuber” (virtual YouTuber). The virtual interactions served as a form of social rehabilitation, slowly giving her the strength to face the world again.
Challenge societal taboos
Eventually, Azuma stepped out from behind the avatar, transitioning into a successful live-action AV actress. Today, she uses her platform to challenge societal taboos surrounding intimacy and to send a defiant message to the conservative medical professional who nearly destroyed her life.
“Sex is directly linked to life itself, yet society consumes it while treating the people involved as a taboo,” Azuma stated.
She noted that appearing on camera with her real face is a deliberate choice. “I want to shatter that contradiction from the position of an adult actress — a role socially opposite to a doctor. And I want to show him: I survived, and I am shining right here in this world.”
