TOKYO (TR) – Tokyo Metropolitan Police have established on a limited basis a special consultation office in Taito Ward to assist in the identification of corpses found in the capital, reports TV Asahi (Sept. 16).

Between September 16 and 30, persons in search of loved ones are invited to look through information sheets for bodies that police have not been able to identify at an office at Senso-ji Temple in the Asakusa area.

The information includes the date the body was discovered, details on clothing and a rough sketch of the person. A QR code has also been provided so persons can download the information to their phones.

As of the end of July, police had 3,035 unidentified corpses on file, with the date of discovery of some bodies dating back as far as 1995, according to the Sankei Shimbun (Sept. 2).

For the first 15 days of the month, a similar office was located at Kogan-ji Temple in Toshima Ward.

“We want to return as many bodies as possible (to families),” said Tomoaki Uehara, the head of the identification division. “Of those unidentified persons, even if it’s just one person I want to find the family.”
