TOKYO (TR) – Representatives of railway operator Tokyu this week offered a glimpse at the ongoing underground construction project in Tokyo’s Shibuya district that in 2012 will link the Tokyo Metro Fukutoshin Line with the Tokyu Toyoko Line.
The existing Fukutoshin Line terminates at Shibuya Station, while the Toyoko Line uses the station as a starting point in connecting to Yokohama to the south. The project will create an underground Shin Shibuya Station under Meiji-dori to join the two lines.
From the new station, the tunnel will extend to the south at a slight incline for 1.4 kilometers, at first running beneath Meiji-dori and then directly under the path of the existing aboveground Toyoko Line. At Daikanyama Station, the line will merge with the existing Toyoko Line from Shibuya Station and continue to Yokohama.
Above Shin Shibuya station at Meiji-dori, Tokyu will establish the mixed-use Shibuya Hikarie complex, which will include shopping outlets, restaurants, office space, and a performance theater.
