OSAKA (TR) – An Osaka Prefectural Police officer on Wednesday fatally shot a man wielding a bladed weapon at a supermarket in Kawachinagano City, reports Nippon News Network (Aug. 4).
At approximately 7:00 p.m., a person placing an emergency call reported that a blood-stained man holding a kitchen knife was acting violently near the entrance of the supermarket, located in the Kido-nishimachi area.
When multiple officers arrived at the scene, the man pointed the weapon at them. A 32-year-old police sergeant ordered him to drop the weapon and fired a warning shot into the air.
As the man continued to advance toward the officers, the sergeant fired a second shot, striking the man in the left chest.
Police arrested the man on the spot for obstruction of the performance of official duties and violation of the Swords and Firearms Control Law. He was taken to the hospital but was confirmed dead. No police officers were injured, and no bystanders were harmed.
The police are currently investigating the man’s identity and the specific details of the incident. Regarding the use of the service pistol, they stated, “We believe the criteria for firing were met, but the details are still under investigation.”
