TOKYO (TR) – Tokyo Metropolitan Police have arrested a 55-year-old man over a drunk-driving hit-and-run in Machida City that left a bicyclist fighting for his life, reports Nippon News Network (June 10).
Hideaki Kanazawa is accused of striking a cyclist in his 50s head-on last month. According to the Tokyo Metropolitan Police, Kanazawa failed to navigate a curve and veered into the oncoming lane, plowing into the victim.
Investigators estimate Kanazawa was driving at speeds exceeding 70 kilometers per hour at the time of the collision. Following the crash, a breathalyzer test revealed his blood alcohol content was more than four times the legal limit.

The victim suffered severe injuries, including a fractured skull, and remains in a bedridden state.
Upon his arrest, Kanazawa denied the allegations, telling investigators, “I don’t remember.”
Police are continuing their investigation and are considering slapping Kanazawa with the more severe charge of dangerous driving resulting in injury.
