TOKYO (TR) – Tokyo Metropolitan Police have arrested two men accused of going on a rapid-fire theft spree, with one suspect brazenly flashing a peace sign at cameras, reports Fuji News Network (July 29).
Shohei Iwai, 42, and Kazuki Miura, 36, allegedly operated as a “car burglar duo,” splitting the roles of perpetrator and lookout to carry out a string of robberies.
According to police, the pair’s spree took place in May 2026. The two men first broke into a training gym in Minato Ward, where they stole a personal computer.
Immediately after, they traveled to Shinjuku Ward, where they smashed the window of a luxury foreign vehicle and made off with sunglasses and other items from inside the car.
Investigators believe the duo carried out a total of four separate thefts within a span of just 30 minutes.
At the Harajuku Police Station on July 18, Iwai was captured on camera flashing a “V” sign with the fingers of his right hand from the back of a police vehicle, while his accomplice, Miura, kept his head bowed.
Both men have exercised their right to remain silent regarding the charges. However, Iwai has offered cryptic remarks to investigators, stating, “I am the wind. I am the wind of Naniwa [Osaka].”
The self-proclaimed “wind” appears to have left a long trail of destruction. Police suspect Iwai was previously involved in approximately 100 car burglaries in the Osaka area, and investigators are currently probing his connection to those outstanding crimes.
