Pair accessed ChatGPT to try to sell stolen chainsaw

KANAGAWA (TR) – Kanagawa Prefectural Police have arrested two men for allegedly breaking into a warehouse in Gunma Prefecture earlier this year and stealing a chainsaw and other items.

According to police, Yuto Nakano and Hiroto Urabe, both 21, used a generative AI to estimate the value of the stolen goods, reports Fuji News Network (Apr. 1).

In January, Nakano and Urabe allegedly stole the chainsaw and other items from the warehouse. During questioning, Nakano admitted to the charges, stating he had committed about 10 similar crimes in Gunma Prefecture.

After the incident, Nakano uploaded an image of one of the chainsaws to ChatGPT and asked, “How much can I sell this for?”

In February, Nakano was arrested for attempting to break into a house in Yokohama City, Kanagawa Prefecture. During that investigation, his smartphone was found to contain images of the chainsaw stolen from the warehouse, which led to his arrest.

Urabe stated that he went to Yokohama City after receiving instructions from a local acquaintance.

Police believe that the pair received instructions from a mastermind via the chat app Signal.
