Oita train driver opens doors 5 meters short of platform

OITA (TR) – Passengers on a local train in Oita City were met with a wire fence and thin air instead of a station platform after a driver prematurely stopped the train on Monday morning, reports TV Asahi (May 5).

Just after 10:00 a.m., a train operating on the JR Hohi Line pulled into Nakahanda Station but halted approximately five meters short of its designated stopping position.

Oblivious to the error, the doors were opened. Passengers attempting to alight from the rear carriage suddenly found themselves staring directly at a wire mesh fence, with no platform beneath their feet to safely step down onto.

When questioned about the perilous blunder, the driver admitted to being entirely at fault.

“I was distracted by another train and neglected to pay proper attention,” the driver explained.

According to officials, none of the six passengers on board the train at the time were injured.
