Mountain guide Kenjiro Yokoyama, 71, of Matsumoto City was heading to Mount Hotakadake from Mount Nishihotakadake at an altitude of some 2,900 meters when he accidentally fell about 50 meters and sustained serious injuries on Sunday at around 8 a.m., Nippon News Network reports (July 18).
Yokoyama was rushed to a hospital in Matsumoto City by prefectural helicopter on Monday morning, but his death was confirmed by 7 a.m.
A prefectural helicopter was dispatched in response to an emergency call that Yokoyama made on Sunday, but poor weather conditions hampered rescue attempts.
The Shinano Mainichi Shimbun reported that Yokoyama had succumbed to his injuries by the time rescuers reached his position.
Yokoyama was mountain trekking as part of a six-member group since Saturday on a two-night, three-day itinerary.
