TOKYO (TR) – The Japan Sport Council said on Friday that unrecoverable costs due to a change in the design for the National Stadium to be used for the 2020 Olympic Games have risen by roughly 10 percent, reports TV Asahi (Aug. 26).

The council said that costs that cannot be recouped in changing from the design of Zaha Hadid Architects have risen by 600 million yen over that announced in August of last year. The new total is 6.86 billion yen.

Of that total, 1.4 billion yen has been earmarked for ZHA, the firm headed by Iraqi-British architect Zaha Hadid until her death earlier this year. Another 3.8 billion yen is a commission for a joint venture for construction management services.

ZHA’s original design was scrapped in July of last year after rising material and labor costs pushed the project’s estimated total cost to 252 billion yen, a large increase over the estimated 130-billion-yen figure that was accepted by the JSC in 2012.

Last December, JSC chose a design by Kengo Kuma as a replacement under an estimated of 153 billion yen.
