TOKYO (TR) – A man in Fussa City injured seven persons on a street with a hammer-like object and pepper spray before barricading himself inside his home.
Tokyo Metropolitan Police are now negotiating with the man to convince him to surrender, reports TBS News (Apr. 29).
At around 7:30 a.m., an emergency call was placed with police. “A man with a hammer is hitting someone,” the caller said from a street in Kamihira.
According to police, the man, aged in his 30s or 40s, struck a second man on the head with a hammer-like object.
The man, who was with his mother, then fled inside his home. When police officers arrived, the man suddenly sprayed what appeared to be pepper spray in front of his house.
The second man who was struck on the street was bleeding from his head upon the arrival of police. He was taken to a hospital with injuries that are not life-threatening.
Six male police officers who were sprayed with the spray suffered minor injuries, including eye irritation.
The man remains holed up in his home.
The scene is a residential area approximately 700 meters northwest of JR Fussa Station.
