CHIBA (TR) — Police here have arrested a 29-year-old man on suspicion of violating the Stalker Regulation Law after he repeatedly visited the home of his ex-girlfriend’s mother and left a smartphone in the mailbox.
Honami Sonoda was taken into custody following multiple uninvited visits to the Chiba Prefecture residence, reports TV Asahi (Apr. 17).
According to police, Sonoda would arrive at the home early in the morning and ring the intercom. Upon confirming that his ex-girlfriend was not present, he would drop a smartphone into the post box. Written on the back of the device in permanent marker was the suspect’s name, “Sonoda.”
During police questioning, Sonoda partially denied the stalking allegations, insisting to authorities that his intentions were purely romantic.
“I went to the house to see my ex-girlfriend to propose to her, so I am not a stalker,” the suspect told investigators.
When asked to explain the device left at the scene, Sonoda provided a bizarre justification.
“I put it in as a substitute for a wedding ring,” he was quoted as saying.
