Hokkaido man turns himself in after bludgeoning girlfriend to death with hammer

HOKKAIDO (TR) – Hokkaido Prefectural Police have arrested a 33-year-old man on suspicion of murder after he allegedly beat his girlfriend to death with a hammer inside his Sapporo City apartment, reports the Sankei Shimbun (July 12).

Yuto Okamoto, a self-described part-time worker residing in the Aobacho area of Atsubetsu Ward, is accused of striking the victim — a female acquaintance believed to be in her 20s — multiple times in the head with a hammer at around 2:00 p.m. on July 11.

The gruesome crime came to light when Okamoto walked into the Sapporo-Atsubetsu Police Station to surrender. “I killed my girlfriend and came to turn myself in,” he told officers at the front desk.

Rushing to his apartment, police discovered the young woman slumped against a wall, bleeding heavily from her head. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Okamoto has fully admitted to the allegations, reportedly telling investigators in his confession, “I have done something that cannot be undone.”

Police are currently working to formally identify the victim and are investigating the events that led to the fatal dispute.
