GUNMA — Police here have arrested a 64-year-old man on suspicion of attempted murder after he allegedly dragged a police officer with his van for 125 meters during a traffic stop, leaving the officer with a fractured skull, reports TV Asahi (May 5).
According to police, the incident occurred on Monday afternoon in the Ikahomachi area of Shibukawa City. A 46-year-old police sergeant was conducting traffic enforcement when he instructed an approaching van to stop.
The driver ignored the order and accelerated away, dragging the officer for approximately 125 meters before he tumbled onto the roadway. The officer sustained severe injuries in the fall, including a skull fracture.
The vehicle immediately fled the scene, but the driver surrendered at a local police station approximately eight hours later.
Police identified the suspect as Tadashi Jinbo. He has been charged with attempted murder and obstruction of official duties.
During questioning, Jinbo denied the allegations. “I had no intention of killing or injuring him,” he reportedly told investigators.
Police are continuing to investigate the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.
