TOTTORI (TR) – Police have arrested a 47-year-old dispatch worker in connection with a knifepoint robbery at a supermarket in Sakaiminato City earlier this year, authorities announced on Tuesday, reports Nippon News Network (June 9).
In February, Ryuji Komatsu allegedly broke into the supermarket through a back entrance. Surveillance footage released during the months-long manhunt showed a suspect dressed entirely in black peering into the building before slowly creeping inside.
Once inside the store, Komatsu threatened an employee with a bladed weapon and made off with approximately 1.9 million yen in cash before fleeing the scene.
Following his arrest on suspicion of trespassing and robbery, Komatsu admitted to the allegations.
Authorities believe the suspect continued living a normal life and working his regular dispatch job in the months following the heist. Police are currently investigating his motive and the exact route he used to escape.
