‘Crows swarming’ leads to discovery of corpse along highway in Shimane

SHIMANE (TR) – It has been about two and a half months since a flock of birds led police to a body on a sloped area off a highway in Masuda City.

Despite the lengthy period since the discovery, the identity of the body remains unknown, reports TBS News.

At around 5:50 p.m. on May 2, a person driving along National Route 191 in Utsugawa, the town of Mito alerted police. “A person is lying on his back and crows were swarming around him,” the caller said.

The approximate age of the man is not known. Of medium build, he stood about 168 centimeters tall. With short hair streaked with gray, he was clothed in a black long-sleeved T-shirt, navy blue sweatpants and a disposable diaper.

The person was not wearing shoes or other footwear, and no personal belongings were found at the scene.

There were no external injuries on the body, but wounds caused by animals evident in multiple locations, mainly on the face, police said.

National Route 191 runs from Masuda City to Hiroshima Prefecture. The location of the discovery is deep in the mountains where there are no houses.

The person who made the call was driving near the scene when he noticed crows taking off all at once. He then peered down the slope and discovered the body.

There have been no missing persons reports in the area of the discovery that match the person’s height and other characteristics.

Police are considering the case to be either the result of foul play or an accident.
