Chinese cram school teacher arrested for taking Nihon University exam for student

TOKYO (TR) – Tokyo Metropolitan Police have arrested a 39-year-old Chinese juku cram school teacher for attempting to take a university entrance exam as a proxy for another student.

According to police, the high-tech cheating scheme fell apart when the actual applicant arrived at the testing venue, reports TBS News (May 21).

Li Bin is accused of forgery of a private document and trespassing. On March 4, Li allegedly infiltrated a Nihon University entrance exam venue in Setagaya Ward, taking a seat and writing the name of a teenage Chinese male on an answer sheet.

Upon his arrest on suspicion of trespassing and forgery of sealed private documents, Li admitted to the allegations.

Police said Li was recruited by an individual he met on social media who promised him a financial reward for taking the test. Equipped with an admission ticket bearing the teenager’s name, Li arrived at the venue with a miniature camera concealed inside his shirt sleeve.

However, the scheme unraveled before it could truly begin. While Li was seated at the assigned desk, the actual teenage applicant arrived to take the test, immediately exposing the proxy plot.

The teenage student has told police that he never asked Li to take the exam on his behalf.

During a subsequent search of locations linked to the suspect, police seized multiple electronic devices, including miniature cameras and wireless earphones.

Police suspect the hidden camera was intended to secretly transmit exam questions to an accomplice outside the venue as part of an organized, high-tech cheating operation. The investigation remains ongoing.
