Niigata cops: Woman found dead in canal likely stabbed son to death

NIIGATA (TR) – Niigata Prefectural Police are investigating what is believed to have been a murder-suicide after the bodies of a woman and her son were found in two locations in Sanjo City, reports Nikkan Sports (May 9).

At approximately 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, the body of Chihiro Kobayashi, 50, was found with several stab wounds to the head in a second-floor bedroom of the residence, located in the Nishihonjoji area, by his younger brother.

Police arriving at the scene confirmed Kobayashi dead. A blood-stained knife was found in the room. The residence had not been ransacked and there were no signs of forced entry, police said, according to NHK (May 9).

The two brothers live in the residence with their mother, whose whereabouts were unknown at the time of the discovery.

At approximately 5:00 a.m. on Monday, the body of the their mother was found in a canal, located about 1.5 kilometers from the home. Police concluded that she died due to drowning.

Police suspect that the woman killed her son before taking her own life.
