Officers took two Nigerians, aged 39 and 43, into custody after a search of the residence of one of the suspects in Chiba Prefecture revealed 14 kilograms of cocaine and 1.4 kilograms of stimulant drugs — a violation of the Stimulants Control Law regarding intent to sell.
The seized contraband is believed to have a street value of 1.5 billion yen. Officers are now investigating how the drugs entered Japan.
On October 7 and 8, the suspects are alleged to have been in involved in the sending of 4 kilograms of stimulant drugs by express mail from Kenya to Kansai International Airport.
Both suspects have denied the smuggling allegations.
According to investigators, the mailed drugs were inside polyethylene bags, whose contents were obfuscated by a shell of nuts molded to their exterior.
As for the search of the home in Chiba, officers discovered the drugs concealed inside African folk crafts.
