AICHI (TR) – A male employee for Toyohashi City borrowed over 58 million yen from over 50 people, including his subordinates, and died about three years ago without paying it back.
It is a matter that was recently raised with the Toyohashi City Assembly.
“A senior employee left many subordinates with a large amount of debt when he died,” said city councilman Yasuyuki Teramoto. “This is not something that can be dismissed as a personal matter. A third-party committee should investigate this.”
“I lent him over 1 million yen,” a former subordinate of the man tells TV Asahi (Dec. 14). “I told him to pay me back what I lent him.”
His boss was a male section manager-level employee in Toyohashi City who was about to retire. He borrowed a total of 58.54 million yen from 57 people, including subordinates and acquaintances, during his lifetime.
“I feel stupid for lending it to him,” the former subordinate adds.
The former subordinate said that he had been asked to borrow money by phone and email many times since the summer of 2020, citing “family circumstances” and other reasons.
The man’s bonus and salary just before his death were used to repay the debt, but the amount was about 2.31 million yen. The repayment rate remains less than 4 percent.
The former subordinate says that it was difficult to refuse because the borrower was his boss.
“I think that anyone would agree that he was a gentle and kind boss, not the type to cause problems,” the former subordinate says. “He was close to retirement, so he said he would pay me back with his retirement benefits.”
