KAGAWA (TR) – At least eight passengers required medical treatment after a canister of bear repellent accidentally discharged from a man’s backpack at a train station in the town of Tadotsu, police said.
The incident occurred at approximately 6:35 p.m. on Tuesday on a platform at JR Tadotsu Station. According to the Marugame Police Station, a 43-year-old male passenger had placed the bear spray in the side pocket of his backpack while traveling for an outdoor excursion.
Police believe the nozzle was accidentally triggered by a sudden impact or shift in movement, releasing the noxious chemical into the surrounding crowd.
Nearby commuters quickly complained of stinging and burning pain in their eyes and lips. Emergency responders treated at least eight victims at the scene.
As a result of the accidental discharge, station staff conducted emergency safety checks on the platform, causing a 34-minute delay for a local train bound for Takamatsu City.
