Yokohama man accused of assaulting doctor at clinic

KANAGAWA (TR) – Kanagawa Prefectural Police have arrested a 27-year-old man on suspicion of attempted murder over the alleged assault of a female doctor at a clinic in Yokohama City early Friday, reports NHK (May 16).

At around 7:30 a.m., Teru Maruyama allegedly broke into the clinic in Kohaku Ward and tied up the ankles of the 68-year-old doctor with a rope.

The suspect then allegedly hit her in the face and other parts of her body with a lantern and a spray can that were in the facility. He then fled the scene.

Police said the injuries sustained by the doctor are serious but not life-threatening.

After an examination of security camera footage, police located Maruyama at his home in Yokohama. “I assaulted the doctor, but I did not intend to kill her,” he said in commenting on charges of attempted murder.

Prior to the incident, the doctor, who was not acquainted with the suspect, was preparing to conduct medical treatment when he burst inside.

Police are currently investigating the motive and circumstances that led to the incident.
