TOKYO (TR) – Police are currently investigating whether organized crime was involved in a shooting at a restaurant in Chiba Prefecture on Monday morning that left one man in critical condition, reports broadcaster NHK (Feb. 13).

At 10:00 a.m., a man with a pistol seated with a group of four or five at the entrance of an outlet of the Denny’s family restaurant chain in Togane City opened fire and struck another man in the chest. Both the gunman and the victim are believed to be around 60 years of age.

The injured man went into cardiopulmonary arrest and was airlifted to a local hospital. The gunman, wearing black clothes and sporting closely cropped hair, fled in a vehicle. Chiba prefectural police are now engaged in a manhunt.

The 10 other customers inside the restaurant at the time were not injured.

The victim is believed to be a former senior-level member of the Sumiyoshi-kai organized crime group and an acquaintance of the gunman, who police said is likely an ex-member of the Yamaguchi-gumi, Japan’s largest criminal family.
