Man pulls knife on Tokyo convenience store clerk, flees empty-handed

TOKYO (TR) – Police in Akishima City have arrested a 42-year-old unemployed man on suspicion of robbery causing bodily harm after he stormed a convenience store and held a knife to a staff member’s throat, reports Nippon News Network (Nov. 3).

In the early hours of October 23, Yuki Sasaki entered the store’s backroom and cornered the male clerk, aged in his twenties.

He then pressed a bladed weapon against him and demanded, “Give me the money.” The suspect fled the scene without taking a single yen after the clerk fought back.

The struggle cost the clerk dearly. He sustained injuries to his hand requiring ten days to fully heal, police said.

Sasaki has admitted to the allegations, and his confession lays bare a portrait of a man who had hit rock bottom. “I quit my job, lost my home, and had no money, so I resorted to robbery,” he told investigators, according to police.
