Osaka man accused of beating wife to death and dumping missing corpse remains silent at trial

OSAKA (TR) – An unemployed man accused of fatally assaulting his wife and dumping her body remained completely silent during his first court hearing on Wednesday, going so far as to refuse to state his own name, reports Kansai TV (Aug. 19).

Yoshifumi Kuroki, 36, is facing charges including bodily injury resulting in death and abandoning a corpse. Prosecutors allege that in 2024, Kuroki beat his 52-year-old wife, Izumi, to death at their residence in Osaka City’s Chuo Ward.

Following the fatal assault, Kuroki allegedly conspired with a male acquaintance in his 30s to transport Izumi’s body by car, eventually dumping it in or around Okayama Prefecture.

To date, Izumi’s remains have never been found. The investigation is further complicated by the fact that Kuroki’s alleged accomplice committed suicide shortly after the incident.

During his first trial hearing at the Osaka District Court, Kuroki exercised his right to remain silent regarding the indictment. When asked to state his name for the court, he also refused to speak.

The trial is shaping up to be a fierce legal battle. Despite the absence of a body, prosecutors maintain they can prove the abandonment of the corpse based on witness testimony and circumstantial evidence.

The defense, however, is aggressively fighting the charges. Kuroki’s legal team is demanding a dismissal of the lethal assault charge, citing a lack of substantial proof. Furthermore, they are pleading not guilty to the charge of abandoning a corpse, arguing that without a body, the prosecution lacks the physical evidence required to secure a conviction.
