Man accused of directing botched Tokyo home invasion from shadows arrested

TOKYO (TR) – Tokyo Metropolitan Police have arrested a 25-year-old man suspected of recruiting accomplices and pulling the strings during an attempted home invasion and robbery in Koto Ward earlier this year, reports TBS News (June 22).

Kaito Numata, whose address and occupation are unknown, is accused of attempted robbery and trespassing. Police allege that in March, Numata conspired with a group of men to break into a combined residence and corporate office in the Shiomi area with the intent to steal cash and valuables.

Numata’s capture brings the total number of arrests in the case to six.

Investigators believe Numata did not physically enter the property. Instead, he allegedly acted as a recruiter for the break-in team and issued directives to the perpetrators from a location near the crime scene.

His involvement in the botched heist came to light after police analyzed communication data extracted from the smartphones of the five previously arrested suspects.

The Metropolitan Police Department is continuing its investigation, operating under the belief that additional accomplices tied to the robbery ring remain at large.
