‘I wanted free Wi-Fi’: Nepalese man arrested for occupying Hakata mall toilet

FUKUOKA (TR) – Police in Fukuoka City have arrested a 20-year-old Nepalese national after he locked himself inside a men’s restroom at a major commercial complex to use its internet connection, reports RKB Mainichi TV (May 18).

The unnamed suspect, whose occupation and address are unknown, was taken into custody in the early hours of May 18 after being discovered inside a toilet stall on the 9th floor of the JR Hakata City shopping center.

During police questioning on suspicion of trespassing, the suspect admitted to the allegations. “I went into the 9th-floor men’s toilet to use the free Wi-Fi,” he told investigators. “I went in at around 9:30 p.m. and intended to leave by 10:30 p.m., but I just fell asleep inside the toilet.”

The arrest happened just after midnight after a patrolling security guard contacted police to report the squatter. “A foreign man is holed up in the 9th-floor toilet,” the guard told dispatchers. “He is a nuisance customer who has done the same thing before, so please come.”

Officers arrived at the 9th-floor restroom — located near the mall’s cinema — and arrested the man on the spot for entering a structure without a valid reason.

According to police, the suspect has a history of occupying the men’s toilet cubicles at JR Hakata City for extended periods, sometimes remaining hidden inside long after the facility has closed.

Authorities had already issued him a stern warning for the exact same behavior on April 20.
