Pair nabbed over alleged assault that seriously injured taxi driver

TOKYO (TR) – Tokyo Metropolitan Police have arrested two men over the alleged assault of a taxi driver last year that left the victim with serious injuries, reports TBS News (Mar. 27).

Last December, Ryuto Fukuda, 24, and university student Hiroshi Matsui, 21, allegedly assaulted the male driver, aged in his 40s, by punching him in the face on a street in Itabashi Ward.

The driver suffered serious injuries, including a fractured jawbone, that will require two years to heal.

Upon his arrest, Fukuda partially denied the charges. He said, “I didn’t beat him up after he was unconscious.” Meanwhile, Matsui denies the charges. “I’m not convinced,” he said.

Matsui is a third-year student at Nihon Keizai University. Prior to the incident, he was sleeping in a parking lot in Itabashi.

After he was then woken up by five men passing by, he became angered and called Fukuda over. They then began assaulting two of the men.

The remaining three men fled to a nearby taxi company, and Matsui and Fukuda pursued them. However, the taxi driver called out to them, and Fukuda allegedly attacked the taxi driver on his own.
