KANAGAWA (TR) – Kanagawa Prefectural Police have revealed that officers fraudulently issued thousands of traffic tickets, reports Nippon News Network (Feb. 14).
According to investigators, members of the Kanagawa Prefectural Police’s 2nd Mobile Traffic Unit issued tickets when enforcing traffic violations such as speeding, even when no clear violation actually occurred.
As a result, Kanagawa Prefectural Police plan to revoke more than 2,600 traffic violations.
In 2024, a person who had been issued a ticket contacted the police. When police examined dashcam footage and other records, they confirmed numerous instances of inappropriate enforcement over a period of approximately two years from 2022.
In addition, police will refer documents to the prosecutor’s office as early as next week. They will also impose disciplinary action against a former police sergeant and several others on suspicion of preparing false reports and writing false information on traffic violation tickets.
Prefectural police also plan to return fines paid by violators in the revoked cases, which will amount to more than 30 million yen.
