TOKYO (TR) – Tokyo Metropolitan Police have busted a fraud ring, which included an organized crime member, for defrauding senior citizens in telephone scams, reports Nippon News Network (Feb. 4).

At the end of December of last year, the five-person ring, which operated out of an office in Chiyoda Ward, allegedly requested a payment of five million yen from a 93-year-old woman in Chiba Prefecture in exchange for resolving a financial problem that had been fabricated.

Police have charged Genta Sakamoto, 26-year-old member of the Inagawa-kai, Ryohei Yamaguchi, 27, and three other suspects with attempted fraud.

Between January of last year and October, the ring is believed to have defrauded at least 10 victims out of approximately 60 million yen.
