According to the indictment, Kenichi Sato allegedly stealing seven stainless steel parking barricade poles from parks managed by Sendai between July and August. Sato then sold the poles and other items to dealers under false names.
At a hearing on February 18, the prosecution demanded a two-year prison sentence and a fine of 300,000 yen. “It was a heinous crime of stealing public property for personal gain,” the prosecution said.
At a previous hearing, Sato, who lives in Sendai’s Aoba Ward, pleaded guilty. He said, “I had debts, so I thought I could make money by stealing metal items.”
The defense is seeking a suspended sentence, arguing that the defendant is sincerely remorseful.
The verdict is scheduled to be handed down on March 3.
