TOKYO (TR) – A male police lieutenant mistakenly thought his gun was unloaded and fired a live bullet at a wall during training, the chief of the police station in Shinjuku Ward said on Wednesday.
The 37-year-old lieutenant was training an officer on unloading a gun when he mistook his own gun to be unloaded and shot a round at a wall in a hallway on the first floor of the Shinjuku Police Station at around 9 a.m., TBS News reports (September 14).
Nobody was injured, police said.
Yasuo Sakuragi, chief of Shinjuku Police Station, said an officer “accidentally firing a gun is regrettable.”
“There will be proper guidance on gun handling in the future to prevent this from occurring again,” Sakuragi said.
